Learn and Apply: Practice Adding Layer Effects, and Then Creating Styles
First of all, read through this comprehensive guide to layer effects by Callum Chapman. He gives a good explanation for each of the layer effects you can apply to a layer. (PDF) To practice, pick either the water droplet style or gold style below and work through the tutorial in Photoshop yourself. This practice is a self-check and does not need to be submitted. |

So, now you have learned that a layer style is a combination of one or more layer effects. You've learned that you can save these combinations as a Photoshop style. We'll be working more with styles next week. If you followed along with everything above, you've even created two very different styles. The possibilities are endless. One of my friends on Deviantart (Gregory) - Sonarpos, has a huge collection of styles you can freely download. Go have a look at the almost endless array of layer styles he has created.
