A04-01: The Golden Mean & the Fibonacci Sequence
Objective:
- Learn what the golden ratio (mean, grid, section) is, how it is determined, and how it is used in design.
- Apply what you learned to cropping an image (or designing a graphic) around the golden section.
Learn:
As we talk about alignment, we'll learn about the Golden Section, one method of aligning and designing that you'll find frequently in nature. Please watch the video, "The Golden Ratio vs. The Rule of Thirds." Here's a free download for your toolbox: Golden Section Grid You can see how the rule of thirds is somewhat similar to the golden mean. |
The two images below lead to short articles about the golden ratio. Have a look at them...
Below is a slide show of examples that use the golden ratio for framing a photo. As you look at each photo, ask yourself how you feel about the balance and layout. How does it feel?
Apply: Take a photo of your choosing and pull it into Photoshop. Use the Golden Section Grid to visually crop your photo to the golden section. Did you like the result? Was it a pleasing design?
This exercise is a self-check on your learning. You don't need to submit it. |
